Hier in Deutschland ist Sand eher selten. Ok, in Kinderspielplätzen und auf Baustellen: Da taucht Sand auf. Und Böden hier in Berlin sind relativ sandig.
Ganz anders sieht das in Ländern wie den Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate aus. Designer in Dubai waren von der Monotonie kommerzieller Designs gelangweilt.

Das Ziel ist es, ein Produkt zu schaffen, das im größeren Maßstab hergestellt werden kann. Nun ist das ein Mischobjekt - einerseits aus Sand, andererseits aus Keramik.

Demnach gab es viel "Trial and error", weil der Wüstensand verschiedenste Materialien wie Eisen, Kalzium, Silikate, Aluminium und Magnesium enthält. Jeder Becher ist damit individuell.
